How do I stop the Sliding door Freezing to the Body

Post by B*Witched Blingo » Tue Jan 22, 2008 11:40 pm

Can anyone help..

Big rain lots of it and then deep frost.. equals morning rush and no access to bongo 1st with a key and then when managed with key, door well and truly stuck. I don't want to damage the seal by just pulling..

Has anyone any suggestions please. I was thinking of vasolene on the seal.

hairdryer if it's frozen? sure the door hasn't jammed? Remember seeing a few posts about this happening to people, needs a bit of jiggery pokery inside the door mechanism if so, hopefully not though
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

I had a similar problem with a Toyota Lucida years ago, but I was able to poor tepid water over the length of the door.. I couldn't this morning as we have a rail over the top..

I was doing the usual morning rush, check tires are up. Nobody or anything underneath etc etc, but could I get the door to defrost not a blummin chance. Trouble was when I came home the door must have defrosted and come slightly ajar as interior rear light was blaring away.. Oh know I thought.. One flat battery coming up or 2 in our case. Thankfully she stared straight away.. Phew.

Good idea about the hair drying. I will leave the old one out handy ready to do the deed..

Cheers Miss fixit..

Boiling water on the gaps, DON'T go on the glass.
A smear of Petroleum Jelly can help, I don't have any, will have to ask someone for a smear....

Problem with hair dryer, outside, 240V, in a rush, trip over wires, etc.
If you have time, you can try that method, but boiling water always works for me on my work van.

Any waxy , greasy film on the rubber should stop the water sticking. If its a problem then I would be tempted to get some silicone spray and spray the rubber and the point where it seals to the door.
Be a little careful with boiling water as I had a very bad mark on the lacquer of a van when I tried to remove a sticker and it took a couple of hours careful polishing to get it out.

Thank you for your help.. I will test the vaso theory out tomorrow and wait for the next frost..

Any other suggestions most welcome.. I don't want to wreck the seal or windows...

definitely go with trying to stop the 2 bits freezing together rather than trying to seperate them when frozen. I have sprayed de-icer on the closing parts with good effect in the past, before closing.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

not allowed bongo for work cos someone wants to play in it, but had same problem with my car yesterday,
tried hot water, de icer spray and in desperation finger nails (not recommended for bongo or people with expensive nails) Finally got into the car set off down the icy road and the passenger door flew open obviousely it had de frosted after i,d been writhing at it.
In my case not a problem no passenger empty road and much reduced speed due to the ice,but it could have been a dire situation for some-one on a school run for example.

Seem to remember many years ago, someone recommending glycerine,I obtained a bottle which I have had for years and when winter is approaching just smear it on a rag around the door rubbers. However dont know if it would be available easily now as I guess it could be used for more sinister applications!!

At the airport I work at we use pigs urine to stop the aircraft controls freezing... but I'm not sure that's an appropriate solution for my Bongo!!
