Thermostat

Post by Bongobus » Fri Dec 07, 2007 5:52 pm

Hi all, im assuming the thermostat is in the metal housing which is to the right of the alternator . Is there any easy way of removal to check the thermostat or does one have to remove half the car as the bolts are underneath facing up.

A pic would be useful to indicate where it is for other members maybe ?

having done this already, under neath is a plastic cover, 4-6 10mm bolts. remove these. long extension bar up under and two bolts holding housing in place. 14mm i think..easy actually but easier with ramps....

you can do it from the upright position if you have a good socket set, i checked mine without getting under the bongo

nowt to do with the socket set(mines task master and snap on ) , just better access to bolts and didnt remove anything else to do it.. plus i already had it on the ramps. you can look straight up and remove it. personal choice ! but aint hard either way....

The workshop manual suggests you have to remove a drive shaft on 4WD to remove the thermostat. I believe someone may have managed to do it without removing the drive shaft (I also seem to recall someone saying its not hard to remove anyway) but if yours is a 4WD you might want to be aware. Mine's a 2WD and the thermostat came out OK.

Good luck 8)

You are a CLEVER man DemonAV and I'd love to know how you did it. BF member Shad just dropped by to return my workshop manual after borrowing it to do a coolant fill and bleed after replacing a perished radiator hose. He wanted to change the thermostat but said the drive shaft completely blocked access to it.

How did you manage it? :?

This is a difficult, but doable. No special tools, only a good set of conventional instruments. Access from top and bottom engine room. Need to delete oil probe for better access (pic2), and release bolts.

mine is a 4wd and shaft isnt an issue. if from above , it doesnt even come into it and from underneath, i used a long extension and it was easy that way too. you wont have any bother.

Sounds a bit like "hayne's manual" syndrome... (strip car completely to gain access to sidelight bulb)
