Louder engine noise

Post by southcoastrob » Wed Nov 28, 2007 3:55 pm

I have recently had all my Glow Plugs changed and ever since the engine noise and normall rattles have now all seemed to have got louder. When I first got back in the trusty steed I thought something else was going wrong.

Is this extra noise down to having much better compression in the engine with all 4 glow plugs working rather than just 1 and a 1/2. Thus the engine is working more?

Your thoughts would be great us usual...

It shouln't get louder ! Once the engine fires up and settles down, the plugs are irrelevant.

Look for the obvious stuff first. Have you clipped the engine cover down properly ? Have you left anything dangling inside the engine compartment ? Is it a rattle or an 'engine in distress' noise ?

I agree with Mick - probably one of the seats is not full clipped in place. Changing the glowplugs should have no impact on compression unless they were loose in the first place. Another thing to check is that the plastic cover on the jack compartment is fitted correctly - you'd be surprised how much engine noise you get if its not closed properly.

I had a cambelt changed a couple of years ago and immediately noticed a more rattley sound - garage noticed it but said it was not the cambelt. Not convinced they had tightened it I had them check it. They did so, but were very aggressive and adamant that it was OK. A week later and still not satisfied I did some more investigation myself, and one of the camcover bolts holds a bracket - this had turned and was vibrating against the bodywork. As it was a bolt they had undone it was their fault and has cost them £1000's of pounds of lost business as I now use Andy in Caerphilly for all my servicing.
The moral though, is that even a slightly out of place component in such a tight space can cause a vibration, rattle and more noise than you are used to.
