I did know what the numbers mean but have forgotton. - I have the chance of a 215/80/15 steel wheel with new tyre to replace my skinny.
I have 215/65/15 on the back of my 4WD Freda.
Should I only use this as a' get me home' or whould I be able to leave it on for a period of time

As you 4wd should have differing sizes front to back, I would use it as a get you home.
If you use it with an odd sized partner, you will be breaking the law, I think.
Some people in the past have had transmission problems from using rubber that doesnt fit.

Thanks for that Dave - Yes I have 215 on the back and 195 on the front.
It was the 80 as opposed to the 65 of the other tyres that concerned me as I assume the skinny would be either 215 or 195 ( I havn't dropped it down to check)

The 215/80 tyre is 9.8% bigger than the standard 215/65 tyre. This would cause severe problems with your 4WD viscous coupling. I would only use it to get to the nearest tyre dealer at the most. Personally I'd scrap the tyre and replace it with the correct size - it's a lot cheaper than a new viscous coupling.

My Bongo came with Alloys fitted with 215/65R15 96H tyres all round. The spare is a standard steel of the same size. Somewhere I read that the steel spare requires different wheel nuts. Can anyone confirm this point.

Thanks all - I think I will still get the wheel but change the tyre - at least it is the correct width and diameter.
By the way John, do you know if there is likely to be a meet round our way over the new year (whoops gone off my own topic)

Tridentlee was talking about a day meet at Southend - I don't know of anything else, but keep your eyes peeled in the Eastern Counties and Fancy Meeting Up sections.

I believe the steel wheels do need different nuts MountainGoat (I got nuts with my 4 when I bought them) but no doubt somone on here with more knowledge can confirm that
