CV joint making a noise

Post by TheBongoBunch » Tue Nov 13, 2007 9:24 pm

We bought a Bongo today, for 2k.

It is a 1995 Mazda Bongo Friendee 4wd 2.5 Auto - camper bit on top.

There is a noise when you start it - previous owner called it a 'knock' but he has never had any problems with its performance.

My hubby says it is a CV joint?! Anybody know if this is a common fault and if it is an expensive thing to fix?

And I would like to say 'hi' to everyone on the forum!

Welcome to the forum - don't forget to put your location in your profile (it helps others to help you :) )
CV joints don't knock when starting the engine, they tend to knock when approaching full steering lock whilst driving round corners. It is more likely to be either a worn or broken engine mount or something (like the exhaust) hitting something as the engine moves.

Thats what the Guy said.. when turning around corners!! So what is the damage likely to be?

Much appreciated for the help!

Have a look at this thread http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ght=joints
Prices seem to vary a lot.

More than likely CV joints, not uncommon after a few years & not a very expensive fix.

There'll be plenty of local help on here in no time. - Welcome to the fold

Welcome TheBongoBunch. Well at £2k you have got a Bongo at a superb price. If it were me I'd assess it to make sure it isnt rusty or clapped out. If the signs are good, I'd spend some money getting it thoroughly worked over (coolant system, waxoyl etc. - lots of advice on here on things to look out ). Keep us posted and send some pics if you get a chance. Maybe see you at a Bongo meet once your machine is sorted and ready to go. Good luck with it - they are a lovely car if you are up for that sort of thing. 8)

We were lucky to get it due to sad circumstances I suppose, the guy who owned it... well.. his wife recently passed on and he just doesn't need it anymore. We have 3 very small children and are very grateful to him. He has never had a problem with it and we will be making sure we look after it well!

It will be getting checked over and MOT'd tomorrow and the Guy is genuine, so we aren't worried. He is a neighbour and has recently put his house up for sale and moved.

We will definitely be up for a bongo meet when we get straight!

Well it sounds like it's gone to a really good home so he should be happy. At that price - and since it sounds like a solid car - you can do him proud and yourselves a favour by giving it a thorough 'Well Bongo' healthcheck. A Bongo like that is more likely to appreciate than depreciate so its hard to see you losing out. With 3 kids, you (and they) will absolutely love the new adventures that Bongoing will bring. Enjoy. Oh and come along to a Bongo meet as they are very children friendly (thanks in no small part to Mrs Peg Leg Pete who is an absolute star at organising kids activities - we owe her so much for that) 8)

I am so pleased.... I can't take piccies yet because my husband has taken it into work to see his friend, who is a Mechanic! I've got a feeling I wont see much of the Bongo for a while!

Got it insured with Lifesure today at £304 for the year - much better than the silly quotes I have been given elsewhere

Can't tax it until Insurance certificate comes but hopefully it will be here tomorrow!

Have to add aswell, the camper bit up top is also immaculate and still has plastic wrapping in places. We put my 2 yr old up there and closed the hatch and she loved it!
