Post by hils » Thu Nov 01, 2007 11:12 pm

hi
Dont know whether you all remember or not but I wrote posted on here a couple of weeks ago about my poorly bongo....broke down etc etc etc..
Anyway my mechanic couldnt find a fult...so we oput it down to empty diesel tank....tut tut me..

Anyway the last couple of weeks ....I keep hearing funny noises two different ones
The first is when I turn left/right in the Bongo....she makes knocking/clunking noise....cant hear it when driving in straight lines...???

The second is like a whining noise......when driving along......sounds like gears

We recently had all four tyres changed dont know whether that anything to do withi it...

I am not a mechanic but b****y wish I was.
but am starting to get worried.....

You lot are usually a font of knowledge any ideas??

Number one sounds like worn front drop links.

Number 2 sounds like Number 1 Manifold Stud sheared.

Both easy(ish) tp fix

Are you going to the Buxton meet? Lots of 'experts' there.

Dont CVs on 4WDs make strange noises like that when turning at low speed? If they are the cause, fix them and see if the whine goes. If it doesnt, revisit it on BF

No doubt the BF gurus can shed light. Good luck

Hils,

I'm sorry but I think Harry is being optimistic! I agree with mike that worn cv joints are a good bet for the knocking noise. Not a cheap job to get done at a garage and not cheap parts either

As far as the whining goes.........i'd think it is transmission noise from a worn front or rear diff.............I have the same on mine. The noise is most noticeable at 50mph ish and when slowing down from medium to high speed. The good news is mines been the like it for nearly 3 years and 25K miles and hasn't got much worse. A normal garage probably wouldn't diagnose it well........a 4wd or transmission specialist would better I think.

A broken manifold stud would be more of a screeching noise or whistling noise.........but maybe one mans whine is another man screech so who knows?

Good luck with it anyway

We had a real whine on ours at about 55 below 50 and above 60
it was gone switched tyres and it was gone.

When I was in the Army all the Land Rovers whined worse than my missus!

Never gave any trouble. (The Land Rovers that is,not my missus!)

I bet your rolling radii are differenet in which you WILL be winding up your transmission. Easy way to tell can you push it along on the flat in nuetral? My bet is you can for a about 1m max then it won't go any further.

Jap spec original tyres are a weird 215/65 profile that we generally don't get in the UK so tyre shops fit the next nearest thing = different rolling diameter front to rear = how to trash your driveline in a hurry

You may be onto something there cap'n... i've always had the same size tyres all round on my 4wd bongo without any drivetrain probs as yet, though i'm sure i can hear one of my c.v.'s grumbling a bit too  The outer boot was replaced a couple of months back, and the c.v. was re-packed with grease... i guess i'll have to replace the c.v.'s now...

Just checked the tyres the front is 195/70 and the rear 215/65 to be honest the second whining noise has only started since the tyres replaced!!!!!!! could this be the answer

Those are the correct original spec size (size c1% different, as designed) , so its not the rolling diameter difference.

Cheap/3rd rate tyres tend to be noiser than premier brand second rate tyres. First rate brands tend to be on brand new cars so you buy another set from the same manufacturer cos they lasted so long but in reality the replacements aren't so good :?

Try swapping the tyres side for side and see if the noise gets better. Make sure if they are directional they are going the right way. Check tyre pressures and keep an eye out for uneven wear.
