The EGR is the Exhaust Gas Recirculating valve - it recycles some of the exhaust gas back through the engine to reduce emissions. Unfortunately, although this may have been an effective pollution reducing measure from new, this seems to cover the inside of the inlet manifold with black goo leading to the air inlet being restricted & black smoke on acceleration. The valve can also get jammed open and/or leak, lots have disabled or removed theirs by various means.
