please could anyone tell me what the egr is,keep reading about it being disconected,why is this and what does it do.thank you

It's the Exhaust Gas Recirculating valve - it recycles some of the exhaust gas back through the engine to reduce emissions. Unfortunately, this seems to cover the inside of the inlet manifold with black goo. Lots have disabled theirs by various means.

I had mine done today using nick skidmore's blanking kit...It poses one big question for me overall....... WHY DIDN'T I DO IT YEARS AGO?

It's going to take a while to get used to the obvious extra torque the egr removal has freed up!

The reason its fitted in the first place heatherperch??

Like franco says,japan has much stricter emissions control than the uk, EGR systems are fine when new, but, like many things,performance falls off after a few years,and it can get to the stage where the EGR system is actually doing more harm than good.

Removal of the EGR unit will not cause your bongo to fail the emissions test at the mot.

What sort of difference does it make to performance? I've been thinking about doing the EGR for a while, but would like to find out whether if it is really worth it.

me and bigdaddycain fitted my egr blanking kit last week, the difference is very noticable when pulling away and it just keeps pulling,got to watch my speed.bigd had his done at the weekend and he said i didnt realize just how much faster it pulls,and no smoke.

If the EGR is working correctly, there's no need to do anything to it.

When it plays up, replacement parts can be expensive, which is why most people either blank it with simple blanking plates, so the EGR can be reinstated if required, or remove it completely.

Others have blanked it with a coin, but this caused problems for one when the coin disintegrated (included in links below). If you want further details, here are links to some of the many egr discussions on the forum.
