Turbo boost?

Hi can anybody tell me at what revs the turbo kicks in? as with an auto box i cannot tell what is boost and whats gear changes.

I don't believe you can tell when the 'turbo kicks in'.

Thinking about it, other than my stage 2 tuned landie, I can't recall being able to tell when the turbo was working and when not on any of my recent turbo diesel cars.

Thats how it should be isn't it - just smooth power all the way up?

I have a boost gauge fitted. The turbo will gradually adds boost from about 1500 rpm depending on your throttle position. Put your foot down and the boost goes up with no real kick. At 60mph cruising in top gear it will show 11psi boost. At 50mph you can show as low as 2psi.
There is no way of feeling the turbo "kick"

i am sure i read on here a while back that the turbo kicks in at 2500 revs?


but i may be mistaken :?

Cheers wanted to know really for the turbo cool down period so i know if ive been running onboost. On my Impreza it kicks in just before 3000rpm but you really know about it!!! so if i know iam near to my destination i keep it off boost so i dont have to leave it on tick over for long.

I got a flat top manual and I think the turbo kicks in when the pasty faced yob in the souped up golf sees me zoom past like poo off a shovel and his jaw hits his floor..oooh I love it. Happy motoring.

:lol: Do you ever shout "SMELL MY CHIPS!" as you pass anyone annoying or is it just me :oops:

As for the turbo kicking in, I have never noticed :oops:

No you and I must be linked, that is exactly what I shout with a couple of expletives thrown in. Plus being a police trained driver we are taught a couple of tricks of the trade so to speak, that is why lots of people think some police cars are "souped up" not true, its just the method of driving.

The turbo is spinning as long as the engine is running but it will start to spool up about 1400 revs and be at full pressure from about 1900 revs. As the auto's are always above 1500 revs you will never feel the kick like in a manual.

Interesting. According to the boost gauge at low revs (1500rpm) you would only just get boost. Put your foot to the floor and the boost shoots up to 11psi (max boost) before the engine speed catches up. The boost gauge swings up and down depending on throttle positon more than engine speed.
