Hi Karen, I use an oil filter remover (radical eh?) from Halfords. The one I have is an attachment to a half inch socket set wrench. It works really well and with an extension you don't even have to put your hand around the filter.
If you change the oil yourself it will pay for itself immediately. If you can afford to wait I am sure ebay will have one somewhere for less money.
I agree with you about the filter change. shame to have a crud filled filter with all that nice new oil in the system.
Hope this helps,
Tim

Just found one for you on ebay, this is the type that works best on the bongo due to the restricted space available. Item number: 150149982444
The one I got from Halfords years ago used a chain instead of the strap but the end result is the same.
Just had a thought about my earlier comment about not having to put your hand into the engine compartment. Not strictly true. When the filter is loose, remove the tool and finish spinning the filter off by hand. I am sure you would anyway but be sure to wear gloves because used oil is nasty stuff if you get it on you.
