Strange engine noise - help!

Post by chris-m » Sat Jul 07, 2007 2:29 pm

I am in need of some advice.
I am not a mechanic (electrical stuff by trade), but have always maintained / serviced my own vehicles myself where I am able. I have had the van for 12 months – 74K miles on the clock.
I noticed a strange noise first about 3 months ago, and it’s getting worse.
If I open up the engine compartment, I can’t really hear anything unusual. The noise is a sort of a warbling / bearing type noise (difficult to describe). Not usually noticeable from cold, but gets louder after a few miles. :(
This is what I have found.
Doesn’t seem to be manifold stud problem
There is some seepage from the inlet manifold of the black sludgy stuff.
Took the alternator belt off, there is a little bit of play in the water pump bearing (seems worse as you rotate the pulley a few degrees). But no water leaks from pump.
But a LOT of play in the air con belt adjuster pulley, is this normal?
Where can I get a new pulley from?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

------------------------
I am beginning to think that the air con belt adjuster pulley is not the problem, as the bearing is held in just with a circlip, so probably will tend to float about to some extent - am I right?

Thanks for the advice. I have put it all back totogether for now, will order a bearing and pump and change them next weekend if it's not raining!
Anything other likely suspects to check out whilst i'm doing it?

Your description of the noise sounds like the start of a water pump problem, but I'm just guessing, I could be wrong. It's tricky to describe a noise. :)
