MOT & fog light

Post by francofontain » Wed Jun 27, 2007 5:37 pm

Hiya folks,

Do I need a rear fog light to pass the MOT? It was mentioned in an earlier post but just for peace of mind I want a get definative answer. Mine hasn't got one fitted but does have the switch (which blows the fuses of the dash and rear lights when selected) so I would assume it has had one at some point. Or do they come fitted within the rear light cluster? And breath!

Thanks

Franco

Yes you do need to have one. You can either fit one in or under the rear bumper or use one of your reversing lights with a red bulb. (not so good.
Sounds as thougth you had one in the past and maybe the wires are shorting, trace them from the switch and all will be revealed.

Seems to me that if it has passed previous mot tests and there is a switch for one that it may have been one of them dangly down ones which has been demolished at some time.......if you use the fantastic search engine you will find a few topics on how to fit one in the rear bumper....can't remember who posted it......

It just seems strange that if it presumably had an mot last year before you bought it, then..where was the fog light and where has it gone, you may find some wires dangling under the back then if it has been knocked off, I can't see anyone fitting one for the mot and then being so mean as to remove it prior to sale, if there are dangly wires they may be touching and that is why the fuse blows when you press it. Just a thought, happy motoring.

Hi Franco,
yes you will need a rear foglight(s) of one kind or another to see you through the m.o.t.

I suspect you had a "dangly" fitted at some stage, and these are notoriously easy to snap off  (usually when the cable at the jetwash gets wrapped around it)

You will probably discover that the cables have been taped up out of the way in a hurry, and the bare ends of the cables are touching each other, or,the power cable may be taped to the body of the bongo underneath  That'll explain the electrical short when you hit the switch.

I changed the "danglies" to these neater flush fitting items.

(my fogs are used as extra reverse lights 99% of the time,i keep red bulbs in the glovebox for m.o.t's etc.)
