no service history trouble/sticking interior

Post by nattydread » Wed Jun 20, 2007 1:32 pm

Hi all,
having only had my bongo for 3 months im comming across a few problems and getting worried. I did not get any service history with the van and the dealer said he had made sure all the oils and fluids were fine before we got the van. However i broke down with sediment in the tank, the rac drained the filter and all was fine again. This has got me worried that the van is in need of a service and im really worried about the cam belt - any help very welcome.
Also a few bits of the plastic interior are comming loose and wondered what glue would be best to use to stick stuff back -

Apart from that i love the van very much

Thanks all :)

As far as the history is concerned, youshould get the dealer to confirm what whas actually changed, so at least you know where you are and what you need to get done.
Most of the interior plastic trim is held in place by metal clips, but they can sometimes get lost if trim is taken out. There is very little that would need glue - what parts are comming adrift?

hi mate will ask my dealer, the bits thata re comming apart is the pannel on the back seats opposite the sliding door - i presumed it was glued, its not come off just loose. Also the thin strip by the handle of the sliding door is a bit loose.

The dealer sounds abit dodgie to me, i mean he said he "made sure" the belts and fluid levels were fine but what does that actually mean you need to contact him and get a direct answer yes or no to did he replace the belts and fluid or did he just look at them, i suspect it will be the latter,

Don't worry if it is there is alot of info on here and alot of experienced members who have done vertually every job there can be done on a bongo so you are in safe hands,

fluid levels and belts are easy to change, the timing belt i got mine done for £100 + vat that inc belt spring and tension bearing so didn't bother to get my hands dirty on that,

the trim thats coming apart check ebay as someone was selling alot of internal trim on there so rather than trying to use normal superglue/locktite that might be worth a look

any other problems dude just ask :D

To be blunt it would be insane to assume the dealer has done anything. At the least you need to change the engine oil and gearbox oils/filters, change the cambelt and check the axles/transfer box as applicable. I would also recommend a coolant change and flush.

It might sound a lot but it is the minimum for a reliable Bongo. After you have done all that you only need to worry about an oil change every 5000 miles or so. You can do most of the work yourself very cheaply.

Natty may i also suggest if you are planning the trip to france that you do change oils and belt before you go then you know they have all being done and take a spare set of aircon/fan belts with you because even though you have just changed them you never know plus they are easy to get hold of here but in france !!!! i always keep a spare set in the van just incase, and if you buy two sets you will only pay the same posting anyway so that will save you a few pound
