White smoke belch on startup when cold.

Post by Kolski » Thu May 17, 2007 2:57 pm

I'd not noticed this when I bought the bongo but from cold, there is a hefty white belch of smoke from the exhaust when it starts up. This disappears almost instantly and doesn't do it again unless the engine cools and is left to stand overnight.

I was given a months warranty on the vehicle which expires at the end of May so really, I'm trying to locate all the faults now before it runs out.

Any ideas on this one ?

Cheers.

Alan.

White smoke can mean:

Bad glow plugs
Isufficient fuel supply
Restricted return
Bad injectors
Pump to engine timing
Low compression

By the fact that you only get smoke at startup and when cold it looks very much like you have one or more faulty glowplugs.

Thanks.

The bongo has done 80000 miles and had no service history so I expected a few niggles.. I think I'll put it in for a full service and belt change when I get back from my test run.

But it's proving to be a great fun vehicle. I'm glad I took the chance on it. :-)

I'm not sure the plugs will be looked at as part of a service unless you specifically ask for them to be tested. It's easy enough to do, a simple check for continuity and a voltage drop.

..and it should have been supplied with good glowplugs so its reasonable to bring it up with them if you are under a warranty
