Finally got round to doing something about a persistant starting problem I have had for a while. The starter would just click and not turn the engine over, and I had to keep on trying until finally it would turn the engine. Once it did, the engine would fire straight away.
Suspecting the solenoid contacts, I removed the starter motor and took off the end cap of the solenoid. Sure enough, the contacts were black so I cleaned them up with a small scraper, but in doing so I realised that they are quite worn too. Does anyone know if the solenoid can be replaced, and if so where one can be obtained? Hope I don't have to replace a complete starter motor for the sake of a couple of copper contacts!

Exactly the same thing happened to mine. Im picking it up from the garage tomorrow, having been told its fixed (same as yours...contacts worn).
If you can hang on I will try to find out where he got them from & update on here. (I suspect any auto electricians would be a good starting point)

starting motor
Had mine reconditioned in Llanelli a little while back, cost £91 all in. Havnt had a starting problem since. To be honest with the constant clicking it was becoming a right pain - used to carry a small hammer so that I could give the starting motor a tap to free the contacts.
There was indeed quite a lengthy discussion regarding this very problem.
It went into quite a lot of detail and I seem to remember that one contributor had sourced replacement contacts.
I remember too that there was a series of photographs showing the procedure for doing the job.
I just cannot be arsed to look for it after a knackering day at work.

electrical contacts
Yes,
there was a thread somewhere revealing how to repair you contacts of which there were two, essentially the main contact would wear out and the second would have little to no wear whatsover. Can you swap both contacts (i don't know) perhaps all of these answers reside in the frequently asked questions anyway?

I say, Do You Bongo?....... RATHER!
There are two contacts which wear, and these are connected together by a disc which is pulled down on top of them when the starter key is turned. I got this website from the thread on here, and it quite clearly shows the plunger and contacts.

It looks like quite a simple replacement proceedure, and not too expensive either.
