Bad engine judder when turned off.

Hi... just got Bongo last week so ironing out problems with Dealer whilst im still fresh in his mind!! Just want to be armed with as much knowledge as poss.

When I start it up there is a reasonably noticable judder then its fairly smooth (well as smooth as a 10 yr old diesel ever gets!)

But when i turn it off regardless of whether its still cold or hot I get really noticable judder.

To me it seems like worn engine mounts may cause that... but i would have thought they would give other symptoms also... ?

Its the same noise you hear when an aged lorry switches of engine....
Cos the engine is transverse the van kind of rocks from side to side as the engine stops running... defo like its swinging about too much.

Mine is supposed to have done 46k..... but im not bad at car stuff and id say more like 90k....

Any one esle had this symptom?

The engine is not transverse, it is fore and aft.

Hi lorraine.
I too notice a slight judder in the Bongo when starting/stopping the engine, sounds like it over runs for a second? I am sure there is a thread about it somewhere

Sorry i had always thought transverse was the "for and aft" way.. but just looked it up on wikipedia..

Means ive used that incorrectly for the last 20 years!! lucky i dont say it very often then eh?!!

If someone could point me to thread that would be good please.. did a search yest on the techie messages and could find anything.. maybe i missed it.

What im trying to work out is whether its worth worrying about or not.

If all 10 yr old chunky engines are predisposed to this then ill live with it.

If it should be fixed I'll take it back see if dealer will sort it out.

My Bongo always gives a brief but strong shudder especially when turning of the engine. I just put this down to a big lump of high compression diesel engine (they say the Bongo has a higher performance head ?higher compression than the standard Ford Ragner diesel) situated right next to you and coming a a quick stop. But the engine does stop immediately. If it is 'running on' then that would be a different matter. Certainly though, I find myself thinking what kind of force does the engine put through the engine mounts when it judders to a halt, but old diesels - in my limtied experience - have always juddered when starting up and stopping. .. ok thanks for views ..... trouble is ive driven 2 other Bongos and they didnt do it.... so perhaps im biased against the evil judder...

normally drive Audi A3 Turbo and there is a wee bit of difference in the style/performance... perhaps making me bit fussy

.... being sold soon so no more Sp30 Sp40 s for me!!!

Definitely Lorraine - the Bongo is no A3 but she is the most loveable old lump I've ever owned. And when running properly, surprisingly refined and comfortable on the open road, if you driver her in the dignified manner to which she is entitled. Sounds like you should pursue the engine judder business though. Happy Bongoing.
