It is unlikely that any of the fans would be running whilst you are moving forward. They only really come on when you have stopped or are crawling after a hard workout, or you sit still for a prolonged period.

If you got all the air out last time, then it could well be there is a crack, failed gasket or hose letting cumbustion gasses or air in when the engine cools.
Ok, thanks mate, I'll take that on board. further further update...it gets better/worse...

After a cool down I topped up the header tank again and took it out around town. No problems at all. round town driving combined with a splat on the dul carriage way. No movement in the gauge at all this time and no fans on when i returned. Good news, perhaps.
however, still a bit worried I had a look around for any leaks but nothing until I noticed some weeping (not drips) from under the mid drivers side of the car. I worked it out that it was coming from a flow and return from underneath where the rear passenger heater controls are. There are a couple of corroded looking pipes under there and some dried residue of water seepage. So I am assuming water must be leaking from there. Anyway, as I dried off the unions with a tissue I must have diturbed a peice of rust and it gushed out!!! That was at 5 oclock and I had to leave for work...

What happens now?
can those rubber pipes be easily sourced?
Will I need to weld up the pin prick hole in the metal pipe it was joined to?

I supposed I should be glad that flake of rust didn't fall off as I went along!..
When will it all end....

This is exactly what happened to me several times. The engine had overheated to the point I was having to put up to 2 litres of water into the system but there was no leak. I was wondering where all the water was going!

This started after I had the top engine hose fixed (one on top of the engine on driver's side). The hose was just leaking at first but then had to have it replaced but the garage put a different hose on instead of a proper Bongo one. The garage said it may cause an overheating problem and to take it back if it did. I did not notice any problem for a long time as I was overseas and when home only doing short local runs. When I did finally take it back to the garage they couldn't find any problem though said there was no thermostat. The temp guage seems to work though.

I'm still puzzled as to what to do. Have ordered a new, proper hose, and am looking for reliable garage in Birmingham area to go to. Am now worried I may have done some serious damage although my Bongo runs fine as long as I keep the water filled up - but I don't go on long runs anywhere at present til I can get it checked.

See my post on 'overheating and garages in west midlands'

Cheers,

Yes, I feel for you mate. Fingers crossed I only had an air lock ultimately caused by a leak, see my thread on the leaky rear heater matrix. I'm still not convinced that this small leak is the cause of me putting in so much water but maybe under pressure it is. Have a look underneath for any leaks no matter how small and once you've got the hose on give it a good bleed.

Lets hold hands and take comfort in each other.

I could understand it if there was any sign of a leak, but none so far. At the moment it's raining to much to check effectively! Hoping to get it sorted soon.

Thanks Pompey fan, good luck for the season, 'cept when you play the Tigers!

I'd been under the van a number of times and didn't spot any leaks, it was only by chance i noticed some weeping (not even a drip) around a couple of pipes that caused all my recent problems. To be honest I don't think its where my water is going but it was a disaster waiting to happen. I literally just touched the pipe with a tissue and it spurted out!

You won't need luck against us this season mate, we've sold all our players! I might even get a game.. :)

Thanks Pompey, I'll try having a look tomorrow as it's suposed to be a dry day. The sky sports report on ground preparations at Edgbaston for the test said it had rained for 14 out of last 16 days here in Brum so we are in need of some dry weather.

I was thinking you might struggle after selling all your players - we're trialling one of your cast offs but so far seems the only player who wants to come to us! Still, we're still on a high to be in the Premier league at all so I'm not complaining - it'll be interesting come what may.

Cheers,
Colin

Hi, Just thought I'd post up a conclusion to this post. All went swimmingly well down in the New Forrest and the kids loved their first camping trip in the Bongo.

I checked the water several times and I STILL HAVE WATER IN THE HEADER TANK!! :D :D :D

So, even after boiling the header tank no less than three times it looks like I saved it and the engine/head is ok. Hope this gives encouragement to all those that think the worst when it happens to them, and that there is, sometimes, light at the end of the tunnel. 8)

Over those 2 stressful weeks I have learnt loads about our Bongo and the cooling system, so i guess every cloud and all that....

It just remains for me to say thanks to all those that took an interest and posted, this forum is a great help and I hope I can post up some worthwhile advice sometime based on my experiences...maybe even meet some of you one day. =D> =D> =D>
