My mothers twin tub was bought in 1960, the spiinner stopped working in 1980 until she replaced the lid with a 6" nail through the lid handle/bracket, it worked until she didn't.
I made my british made tumble drier work for over 20 yrs with a little bit of welding (poor swaging) and new thermostat.
Have we forgotten how to mend things?
MEND things?!? Are you off your ROCKER man? If we make things that are mendable then they won't have to come back so quickly to buy something else. No no, SEDUCTIVE is how we need to make things. There's absolutely no place in a successful business development plan for things that are mendable.

Hi
Mike...
As for people not mending old things....tsk tsk.....we all contribute to a Forum dedicated to just that!!!....old Bongos.
Regarding the old nostalgia trip...yes, I like old things that are worth restoring, but I can't get nostalgic over old domestic appliances....however, my next door neighbour has 50 or so working valve televisions if you want one    The one that always grabs me is when people wax lyrical over Morris 1000s ....what a heap of old doo-doo...rusty, slow, and an absolute tribute to the old MOT stations that would pass anything for a fiver in the old sky rocket!.........and there were a whole string of such beauties offered by all the car manufacturers....Most cars needed a de-coke at 30.000 miles, and an engine rebuild by 40 odd thousand....compare that with today! Also, most folk could repair things themselves, as they had ability....pretty well absent today. There is a saying over here that the kids only go to school for breakfast....(they have school breakfasts instead of dinner).....after which, they hop it.... ...and I think that that equally applies in the UK...they must go for something, because they sure don't seem to learn much!.....Our ex- neighbour in the UK worked for BT, and he said the van drivers would call a breakdown truck to change a spare wheel....because a large number of their drivers didn't know where the spare was or how to change it....go figure!
On the other hand, why repair?....if we did, the UK would be down the lavvy years ago...the mere movement of money in our consumer society actually generates employment....coz we sure as hell don't make anything any more....and without UK society buying new gadgets every minute of the day, there'd be no jobs ...so in a way, you can't go backwards to a society that doesn't exist...unless, of course you really want to....then you'd all be living over here....it's REALLY like life was 60- 100 years ago!...nearly every household where the hubby can weld rust, and they keep the bits that flake off just in case!...
Cheers

Ha ha yes Helen. I had 3 variants of the Morris 1000: travellor, convertible, saloon. My experience backs up yours, but I loved them. The convertible took me on a memorable trip - roof down - to Scotland and back. Happy crazy days. :-)

Hi
Mike....
I had a convertible Mk.2 Consul...wish I still had it...6 seater , bench seats, column change...smooth as silk....even on a cold day you could drive with the top down - the heater was that efficient for those in the front....and funnily enough, they rusted, but not that bad!.....BUT...of all the very many cars I've had, one of my favourites was a homologation model racing Cooper "S"...very rare 970cc model....jeepers, was it quick....really economical if you ran at normal speeds for a mini, but....BUT put your pedal to the metal, and it would drink both fuel tanks dry like a thirsty camel!!!!!....oh...t'other favourite was another mini...tuned to hell and unbelieveably rapid!
Oh...going back toMorris 1000s, I had the open 2-seater version...AKA MG Maggot!
Cheers
Helen
