Or a flower pot.

Well, after some heavy weeding and an evening with Excel and cheese I have managed to set up a sheet using Bills formulas and the answer is 42.mikeonb4c wrote:Bill here. Totally agree with Ben. A complex equation is needed to work out how green our travel habits are. First
(Polluting index of vehicle) x (1/years old) x ((rural miles per annum)+(urban miles travelled x 4)) / number of people being carried
..Ought to start covering the car handicap. Polluting index would need to be derived from volume and nastiness of noxious exhaust gases and particulates. We could also include indices for MPV usefulness/bulk-goods carrying capacity plus maybe another for green holidaying and lift sharing potential. Something could also be added for wellbeing and also for making and mending.
Another equation is needed to assess a person's greenness in relation to holiday habits. The car handicap could then be traded against holiday handicap.
Well, that's it from me. I'm off to the garden to do a few more weeds, bed a few more plants, and evict any unwelcome trolls i find lurking there.

You beat me to it Bongolia. I meant to do exactly that and then try out some comparisons.

Decided I'd have a bit of fun in retirement creating the above mentioned formula in Excel and trying it out on some hypothetical cases. V rough and endless arguments can be had about accuracy / realistic values etc but here's what came out:
Vehicle.................Polluting index...Age....Rural miles.....Urban miles......Number of people/goods carried.........Pollution Impact
Firms car - diesel.....................4......4..........20000.............5000...........................................1.....................40000
Firms car - petrol.....................3......4..........20000.............5000...........................................1.....................30000
London Van - diesel..................10.....5............5000............15000..........................................6.....................21667
London Bus - diesel..................30....20................0............35000.........................................40......................5250
Smart Car 2 seater....................2......6...........5000..................0..........................................1.......................1667
Family MPV - petrol..................3.....10...........4000..............4000..........................................4.......................1500
Bongo..................................5.....20...........5000..............1000..........................................2.......................1125
Hybrid..................................1......6...........2500..............2500..........................................2.......................1042
.....which I thought was quite interesting, as I had no idea what figures would come out. Keeping your vehicle for a long time matters it seems, from this argument. And it is interesting to consider how much energy it takes (and pollution it causes) to create a new vehicle. Mind you, we're into weird territory there, as that would imply huge downscaling of an industry and the jobs that it provides, and that in turn would have uncertain outcomes.
P.S. Laying out a 'table' on here took ten times longer than doing the spreadsheet](./images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)

That is really interesting Bill.
I've long thought the scrappage scheme was little to do with polution and a lot to do with the Sacred Cow, car jobs. Even if a lot are outside the UK.
The outcome would indeed be difficult to predict, but they shouldn't brand us as enviromental terrorists as part of their agenda.
I guarantee the eco warriors will be vandalising diesel vehicles now they've been drip fed the Green Wash.
That's not enviromentaly friendly, is it? And as for 'action films' ie nothing but destruction for entertainment...
