take off the airfilter pipe, the filter lid end, then put your hand inside. drill out to fit dia of valve, screw a nut on to valve so that the valve is trapped onto the big black pipe wall, then cut off valve top to length, you should be left with a short stub to re atatch the thin pipe and one way valve.

I could tap a thread into the plastic then araldite the coupling into place. Would that work maybe?

Well I managed to re-make the vacuum pipe connector, using the brass barb fitting from the silencer of one of my old model aircraft engines (its used for fuel tank pressurisation tube connection). However, its made no difference to the tickover raising function either for cold start or when aircon is on. Using a mechanics stethoscope (hurrah, my ebay purchase at last finds a use!) I think I've ascertained that the white connector/solenoid is working (it seems to energise when ignition switched on and I can hear a clear click) but the black connector one does not (the faint click I can hear is probably just carry-over noise from the white one activating).
So.....any thoughts on how I might proceed from here? When I think of it, the cold tickover lifter shouldn't be connected with the vacuum thingie as I'm sure the throttle gets moved before engine is started if you switch ignition on from cold. Is the vacuum thingie connected to some other completely different function maybe?

the throttle thingy will only preset the throttle if the engine is not running IF your bongo holds its vac, most drop their vac soon after the engine is turned off.
take off the solenoids connect a bit of pipe to it then put 12 volts to it, its only a switch but is polarity concious.

Thanks Ady. Can the solenoids be removed without having to remove the centre section of the engine cover? Also, I tried sucking on the pipe to test the effect of a vacuum but it had no effect. i will see you in a field mike before winter, maybe silvergale beer fest if your up for it.
they are easy to remove in seconds, BUT can break in half a second if you dont do it right, the little securing clip holds it to the mounting plate, or there are 2 bolts that hold the mounting plate to the engine.
the 2 nearest you in the pic below are the ones your concerned with.

Cheers Ady that's encouraging. I wonder if I should try and get over to you for a cuppa and a looksie at some point. Trish won't thank me for getting all techie when we're supposed to be camping, and I suspect we won't make Silvergale anyway. If she's that keen she could join me over your way. Being honest, this is not an urgent thing esp as I have that throttle lock cruise control which is very handy as a manual device for raising the tickover if I'm ever bothered by it (been a really useful device in that respect

Nope. Even my mechanic was unenthusiastic about tackling it, reminding me that his time was my money. And since its a minor irritation only, its gone on the B list for attention. In my case, I have a manual 'throttle lock' kind of cruise control which allows me to lock the throttle pedal at any position. This gets me out of trouble as I simply set it to run a slightly high tickover when required. Since the unit rests by my left arm on the centre console, its very easy to do this in any situation. I would like eventually to get the original units working again properly but I think it will need help from The Great Ady in order to achieve that.
