You are totally fine leaving the solar charger/regulator connected all the time, that's how they are all installed. The charge from the alternator won't "go up" the wire the solar charger. It won't allow it.

When the battery is below full, the solar charger will chip in and help the charging. When it's full the solar charger will stop charging it.

cheers guys, thought i'd be okay but just wanted piece of mind!!! it all seems to be performing okay and the battery is fully charged now so the van is ready to roll should the snow come ;-)
