If your plan is to go south - slowly - then I would recommend the "Bis" route from the Loire somewhere between Blois and Chambard (it is well signposted) to Limoges and then to "Espania" Not much traffic and through rural France.
To me The BIS are really the BIZ! The long straight bit to Le Blanc is really long and really straight - 50 miles of avenue trees, the first time I did it it was on my Honda Bike. Took me thirty minutes. It is the D975. So To Chartre then Blois and then the Bis.
No chance of getting lost on a Bis route every town and village has the yellow "bis" sign.
