hi folks,
i phoned bongobits as it was them i used to order the wrong temp sensor. i cant believe people are telling me that i have my aircon on or is it on auto im not stupid, the guy at bongobits explained it all to me. there are 2 fans that are situated behind radiator for cooling engine. its them that start up & because i got new head fitted 2 months ago ROB at bongobits said that the old sensor with 2 pins would be faulty, so i've ordered a new 1 of them. hopefully this will sort the problem.

You asked for help, people were trying to eliminate the obvious possibilities first, there is no way of knowing your competence level. It was a logical question to ask, remote diagnoses is not an exact science, a LOT of problems get sorted by asking the obvious questions, saves people a lot of time, money & frigging about .
Hope you've found the solution, please keep us informed, it may help someone else in the future.

1) which is why you were asked if your Air Con was switched on..... not thinking that your stupid, just eliminating a usual cause of why the fans are running

2) No disrespect to Bongobits chap, but how would he know the old sensor would be faulty unless it is an assumption or a common fault & I wonder why wasn't it changed along with the head?, (to be honest while changing a head it is best practice to change such items as sensors)

It's not a particularly common fault, but it's possible to damage a sensor when an engine overheats. On some of the heads my husband has replaced, a sensor has actually melted and the damage is obvious (there are photos of this on his website if anyone wants to check what a sensor/damage looks like ). Even if it looks OK, the sensor is one of the things to consider, and the contributors to this thread have eliminated most other possibilites.

just to let everyone know that the problem that i had with the main cooling fan at front of engine behind radiator coming on when i switched on ignition has been solved. i replaced the temp sensor which is located on the side of the head on drivers side just below injectors, it has a green plastic 2 pin connector. solved the problem, thanks for everyone's help.

Nice one , similar problem seems to have cropped up a few times over the last few weeks. Where did you get the sensor from? did you go for a proper Mazda replacement or a compatible part?

Steve, dont suppose you know if this sensor also works the scavenger fan do you?, or does the air sensor under the handbrake work that?

i got the part from bongobits £37, theyr'e really helpful & stock most parts if they dont have it they will order it up for you. steve

the sensor i got at first was the one under the handbrake it turned out to be the wrong one. when i removed that sensor a fan did come on, so it does operate a fan. there are 3 sensors i've worked out. 1 at the front of head that controls the temp gauge in cab which only seems to go to 11 o'clock position & STICKS. sensor 2 below handbrke which i think is air temp but does control 1 of the fans, sensor 3 is the one i have replaced located at side of head on drivers side which i now know controls the main cooling fan at front of engine behind radiator. hope this helps some people with similar problems.....steve

The sensor under the handbrake controls the scavenge fan (the one underneath the bongo forward of the engine) doesn't it? Not really engine cooling, more to keep the tunnel & cab cool & probably all the ancillary stuff under there that doesn't really want to get cooked when there's no air flow through the space?
