Is there a simple and safe way to check to see if the battery has any power?
Easy peasy connect a wire to each terminal, poke tounge out, then put the other ends of the wires on your tounge. Great voltage sensor.
I find that rather shocking.

I'm off ohm!

Watt are you going on about? I'd put up a bit of resistance to that idea, don't think I'd have the capacity to cope with the pain.

A crocodile clip style old fashioned charger fitted under the bonnet,
leave for six hours and remove
start your van.
All of these fancy cheap chargers you plug into your cigarette socket are just that
CHEAP and very low charge rates ( best suited to motorcyle use).
Good luck

Did you ask for a check JR? Most auto electricians will check your alternator for free, may have just been a knackered battery, but i'd follow my instinct and check the alternator too.

Hi BDC
It turns out the battery was at least 5yrs old. That is most probabley why it would not take a charge.
Also someone

had left one of the interior lights on.It was not me

Thats why it drained in the first place
