I accidentally ran my N-Reg Bongo dry the same day that I picked it up! Fortunately I had joined the RAC earlier on the trip.
The needle was still touching the white empty mark and I was waiting for a light that doesn't exist to come on!
The sediment light came on but once I filled up it ran fine.

The needle was right down towards the bottom of the 'E' on the fuel gauge but not past it. Just wondering what's the most anybody has got in the tank as a lot of people have said in the past that they could only get 50 litres or so in. :?
Mine ran out on the forecourt this morning about six foot from the pump  managed to push it close enough and it took 58.8 litres but after i stopped filling there was a lot of gurgling and the level dropped down the neck so could of got a bit more in.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the tank should hold 65litres.

I generally fill up with fuel at home, (diesel /veg oil mix) When the bongo is initially "full" (i.e. top of the filler neck) If left to settle, a fiurther 4 litres of fuel can be added to the tank, to get it back up to the top of the filler...

I've managed to do nearly a hundred miles before the gauge has budged from the full mark this way.

I've never let the level drop below the quarter mark to avoid comlications if i ran her dry.

It sounds like there could still be some air in the fuel system to me steve e.

It may be an idea to loosen the injector pipes whilst the engine is running,(one at a time,on all four injectors)Make sure your getting a uniform flow from each pipe.

This should bleed any air from the system too.

Two pieces of information:

1. My 1997/8 Freda HAS a working fuel warning light. Came on during my recent trip, and I was able to put 54.5l in about 10 miles later without making special "wait and top up" efforts.

Based on what others have said in this post, there's probably a good 35-50 miles left in her when the light comes on. Good to know.

2. At the point the light came on, the needle had parked itself on the left of the E, but still obscuring its left-hand-side somewhat. Without running the experiment, it's hard to know if it will move further.

Wonder what the unusable fuel capacity of a Bongo is? (i.e. how much of the full 65 litres can't be reached? In an aeroplane, this matters; in a road vehicle, not so much :) ).

Same thing happened to me...
I was going down a hill at the time & was thinking she's running a bit quiet. (i was heading to the garage anyway) the road leveled no power... i coasted to the side of the road, i knew i'd run out.
I was thinking at the time about the crap from the tank.
The seller came out with a can & it turned over & started.
No problems. :D

But then i have been used to driving Bedfords & Vauxhals.. all my gauges have lied.
