I've just got a replacement top hose from Mazda and it looks just like the one you disconnected (except not knackered obviously), so I would say your ebay job isn't looking good.

EDIT: On closer examination I think the hose you have might be the "other" top hose - the one that connects the radiator to the metal pipe.

Ahhh, when I referred to the 'top hose' I meant the one that goes from the radiator to the metal pipe rather than the pipe to the engine. That probably explains it, I'll use this pipe to replace that one then....

Well, I've done about 150 miles today under various load conditions without any visible loss of coolant. I ordered a Mason alarm last night and today received notification of it being posted first class. Hopefully should have that tomorrow, then I can see what the temp. gauge actually means...
