Perfect for the job - lift the rear nearside up a bit to extract the maximum out...

Thats the one I would have bought Karen....if I hadn't decided on the cheapskate route!

Go for it.....cheapest I could find for the Pela 6 litre was £35 inc postage from somewher ein Essex.....let me know if you find it cheaper please?

Chums - keep us posted on how you get on with these. Not cheap but if they make oil changes (of various fluids) a doddle then they sound like an attractive option. Can you really do an engine oil change with one of these? Is it realistic to change the ATF with one, and yet not have the pan off to look a the filter? Presumably you have ot make very sure old engine oil is flushed out of it before you use it for an ATF change - or do you, as it is only pulling stuff out? Etc. etc.

Looks like a nice bit of kit. Have to treat myself to one as a late father's day pressie :)

Mike - the issue with the gearbox ATF is that there is no drainplug. You therefore have to drop the heavy cover together with 4 litres of ATF. I challenge anyone to do this without making a mess. So - suck out the ATF and drop the cover dry with no mess then sort out the filter. And yes as you assumed you are only using it for extracting old oil so cross-contamination is not an issue.

I use it to change the engine oil too - I suck out 3 to 4 litres then drop the rest into a drain pan as normal; it just means that your moving 3 ish litres of hot oil in your drain pan rather than 7 - so pouring it into your waste container is a load easier etc.

It's one of those tools that whilst you don't strictly need is very useful and genuinely makes jobs a pleasure rather than a chore.

I change the engine oil in my VW GTTDI with it and it takes out everything - plus you can use it to 'hoover' out the filter housing removing oil that you wouldn't usually get at and so on.

Treat yourself, a great robust tool that has nothing on it to wear out - nice addition to any tool kit! :D

I have the Pela and it is superb. I use it for all oil changes and it is easy and mess free. You need to warm engine oil up to get it to flow a bit quicker but auto dexron will be quite quick.

I use it on auto boxes just to eliminate the mess when removing the sump. I would always remove the sump and replace the filter/s at every change.

There is one for sale on the "Smartmania" forum for £20 plus delivery by the "almost invisible man". Let him know Smartmonkey sent you if you decide to buy that one.

Thnks for that smartmonkey - been in touch with him and bought it. Picking it up on Friday on my way to Charity Farm. Thanks for pointing it out - I mentioned to the vendor that you had referred me to him.

Lewy - if you want to borrow it you are welcome. NeilT similarly and others who are nearby etc.

smartmonkey - here's a question for your mechanically minded brain. I ought to do an engine oil change soon but its a faff. Many people think the 3000 mile interval is a bit OTT given modern oils. If I am able to suck out - say - 4-5 litres of engine oil from the sump (with me Pela pump, obviously), whats the harm in just replacing that with new engine oil. I'd have thought it would achieve a sufficient result. The next oil change is a full filter job, so I will be doing the full monty on that occasion. In fact, I may just pull the sump plug and do the lot this time as well, but I thought it would be interesting to ask the question 8)

I am probably the wrong person to ask because I wouldn't dream of doing a 3000 mile oil change. I change the oil and filter every 5 or 6000 depending on when I get around to it. Oils have come a long way since the Bongo service schedule was devised and I don't think it is relevant anymore. I use a good grade of oil and the best quality filter I can get. If you did mostly short journeys in town then I would knock it back to 3 or 4000. Diesels contaminate their oil with combustion by-products that blow past the pistons. That is why the oil goes black in minutes. Modern oils keep the contaminants in suspension and work better at 10000 miles than old oils do when new.

It is quite acceptable to do the oil change with just the Pela in the dipstick. There is no need to undo the sump plug unless you really want to get the last dribble. The Pela was developed for boats were you have no access to the sump plug. Environmental legislation is tempting some manufacturers to avoid sump plugs alltogether as it eliminates a potential for fugitive emissions.

So thats what happened to my drive!

Mike? i wouldn't mind a nosey at that bit of kit myself? Sounds good.

Could it really extract all the scum from the sump pan? ( and filter?)

A few oil changes ago, (last year i think) i removed the sump, and gave it a good wash in parrafin, in case of crud build up,i needn't have bothered though, the pan was really quite clean. (a bit of overkill on my part there).

I'd always replace the oil filter on every change though,i know you can get away with replacing the filter on every other change, but considering the low cost of filters, is it really worth NOT replacing each time?
