A Big Bongo SOS

Post by BongoJim » Mon May 28, 2007 4:30 pm

Well Picked up my new Bongo on Friday evening hurraaahh :D

private sale sold as seen I must have spent 30 - 40 mins looking everything over. I could kick myself.

Now here comes the bad news.....

Drove 300kms over the course of the weekend and noticed a strong diesel smell when I got home so had a quick look underneath and diesel dripping onto the drive.

Anyway it's dripping from underneath the throttle body/mechanical injection pump.. sounding expensive. please have a look at the images I taken and let me know what I can do ?

I really hope this is not going to be to expensive as I've blown my wad buying it. Any help it greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you only have a rubber O ring to replace.

In the 'search' facility above search for posts by 'bewdleybongo1' and you will see your problem in 'Diesel Leak' outlined and how to repair it.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

The "o" rings have been removed and I'll try and get a new set tomorrow.

Red diesel the cheek ! but I might try veg oil.

O Ring

Post by pyroman » Mon May 28, 2007 8:43 pm

Hello Bongojim,

I have had the same problem and it is a simple matter of replacing the 'o' ring. Just check that it is not from the other side, as this is the same type of 'o' ring. By the other side I mean the side of the fuel injection pump that is next to the engine. It is a lot harder to get at, but someone with thin long fingers could do it.

As for veg oil, remember that it is thicker than diesel and will put more stress on these seals so you might have more of them go. I have had a veg oil conversion on mine and so far it has run reasonably well apart from the initial problem of these 'o' rings going.

Hope this helps

Before you embark on a full veg oil conversion, if that is what you are planning, try it out, all you have to do is... wait until your fuel drops to just below a quarter tank left, bung in 18 litres or so of tesco or other supermarket cooking oil ( 1.75p for 3 litres) top up with regular diesel and away you go, try this for a couple of tanks then just check the filters and I think you will find there will be no probs at all and.. doing it this way saves the intial expense of a conversion. Whatever you decide it is down to personal preference so good luck. Happy motoring.

used veg oil is a lot thinner than straight veg,if using svo you can add a little petrol to thin it down, veg oil will clean your tank of 10 years of crud that has built up so always carry a spare diesel filter or change after around 500 miles, but remember you are supposed to pay duty on veg oil,so always a good idea to byuy some bio from a garage and keep reciepts, veg oil will also find any weak spots in seals on your pump.

Thanks everyone...

The leak has stopped and it's back to motoring.

I was only half thinking about the veg oil as I'd been watching "it's not easy been green" and they set up a bloke with a WVO system in his garage.

I thought I bet I could do that when I get the bongo... :D

I might try some of you suggestions. I'll let you know how I get on.
