SEDIMENT light on dashboard

Post by sandstone » Sat May 12, 2007 9:16 pm

Can anyone help with a description of what the red SEDIMENT light means? It has come on twice for a short time. N Reg Bongo.

Post by sandstone » Sun May 13, 2007 9:33 am

Many thanks for this very useful advice. I will have a look today to see it there's any water, but very soon will have new filter installed on next service. Not running Veg oil mix.

Sediment light

Post by Ame » Sun May 13, 2007 12:46 pm

My sediment light comes on with the charge light whenever i use a few revs (the only time it seems to go off is when the engine is idling).
I just fitted a brand new filter but this hasnt seemed to make a difference.
Any thoughts?

Somewhere in the long distant past, I recall a posting that the sediment light comes on when the alternator is not charging properly (don't ask me why...).

The reason I recall it, was that I had just changed all filters when the sediment light came on a few years ago. Turns out my alternator was shot, so if you HAVE just changed the filters, get the alternator tested.

Cheers

SEDIMENT light on dashboard

Post by sandstone » Sun May 13, 2007 4:43 pm

Curiously the alternator warning light seems to be diode OR-ed into the Sediment light - this I have found from examining the Bongo wiring CD - it's on P54. Don't know why this should be.

The symptoms I have had are a definite ON of the SEDIMENT light on two occasions some weeks apart, but no alternator light, so hopefully it is just a blinded filter.

I have just fitted a split charge relay kit and now the battery light is on with the sediment light so i think they must be linked somehow

Still found a local place that can get a new one for £150 so not the worst news in the world.
Thanks for all the advice.

To conclude. The sediment light never came on again, but the fuel filter has been changed anyway.

I see from other threads that the switch housing on the bottom of the filter also acts as a drain. Unscrewing the switch part way apparently allows you to dump the water/sediment from the bottom of the filter bowl.
