Handbrake and axle oil seal question.
Hi everyone –
I could use some advice
I have been attempting to replace the Offside / driver’s side rear axle oil seal and have a couple of questions.
The handbrake adjuster screw thread – when I reassemble it should the threaded end be on the left or right (it all fell to bits in my hands!)
I have been sent the wrong size oil seal from a well respected parts company (not the club). The oil seal I have received is S1YK-49-150 and is much bigger than the one fitted. I notice that the part number on the Bongo database is S10H-26-154.
The position of the existing oil seal is NOT the same as it appears to be shown on the member’s factsheet?
Can anyone confirm that S10H-26-154 is the correct part number for a 1997 4WD, and I will try and sort it out on the phone tomorrow.
I’m getting to old for this!
Thanks everyone.

Oh Heck, I have in my hands at the moment a seal which was meant to be fitted later this week, Number S1YKK-49-150 I bought it from Bongobits along with some other stuff.
I was supplied with a seal a year or so back from another company for the other side of the axle and my mechanic could not get it to fit so put the new dust seal on and the oil leak stopped and I have been free of oil leaks since.
A phone call in the morning is in order I think.
Further to that, I have a plan of the back axle in front of me and it backs up the club information (26-154) I will try to find the unused seal from last year and compare as well as making that call in the morning.
Anyone else out there with info.
I am sorry I cannot help with the handbrake info. I did not do the job myself last time, nor will I this time!
Best of luck and if I find out more I will get back.

I rang Japcarimport of Leek and spoke to Ian. He says that he thinks there are 2 different oil seal sizes, so I am driving over there tomorrow (in my car) with the ones I removed from the van and see what he's got and check with his mechanic. If anyone has the correct part numbers please let me know.
Having looked at the handbrake mechanism, does it actually make any difference which way around the adjuster is fitted, as they don't appear to self adjust?
Thanks.

I shall get hold of Bongobits and see what they have to say. If they or anyone else has the 26-154 one I shall be getting them in and returning the "wrong" ones.
I was unable to locate the unused seals from a year ago, I am sure I would have checked the number against the plan of axle parts at the time and if there had been a discrepancy I would have sent it back then.
What size are the seals you have from your vehicle, or put another way, how much bigger are the replacements?
Best of luck with yours, I shall get back tomorrow with the latest.
I will also get in touch with Ian Maynard when he is back from the Southern Softies meet. If he has them off the shelf I will get them from him.
All the best,
Tim

The seal I removed from the van is 52mm O/D, the new one I was sent is 70mm O/D.
My van has ABS and has a ABS sensor ring fitted around the base of the axle, and the one in the factsheet does not.
In fact it would seem that the photo in the fact sheet shows the oil seal fitted in the same place that the ABS sensor is fitted.
The oil seal on my van is fitted further up the axle at the point where it thins down.
So I wonder if it is just down to the ABS that makes it different. Does anyone know the part number that I need?
Thanks in anticipation.

OK, I'm back, and watching this thread. According to the Mazda Parts Catalogue, the correct part number for the inner seal (all models) is S09H-26-154. But I too stock S1YK-49-150 and have been sending these out to people for over a year now and nobody has ever come back and said they did not fit.
I have just measured one, and it is 70mm (external measurements).
Chris M....I'm also puzzled by your comment: "I notice that the part number on the Bongo database is S10H-26-154." Where are you looking?

Here's the answer, according to a detailed search of the Parts Catalogue. Part number S09H-26-154 (52mm) is for vehicles up to and including the following VINS.
SGLR-112862
SGLW-110664
SGL3-105357
SGL5-111235
For vehicles with later VINS, the correct part number is S09H-26-154A (70mm) which is the same as S1YK-49-150.
ABS makes no difference.
Oh, the fun we have!!!
