I love to deploy it at times - coming off motorways (but only at an appropriate speed), engine braking on hills, when wanting steady urge when going up a hill. I even occasionally slip the car into S1 (whichever is the next on from D) just to engine brake down the range. But the Hold button is just so neat, and I'm sure its intended to be used as part of the box of tricks. Mind you, as moonshine says, thee is no subsistute for anticipating the road and lifting off in good time so as to get best fuel economy.
