speedo chipping, changing and removing

how can i do it as i replaced the kmh dial for a mph but its not reading right ?

If I understand correctly, if your speedo has been chipped, you don't need to replace the dial.

well , i had a kmh speedo on her and it wasnt accurate so i decided to fit an mph one but thats even less accurate , i thought the chipping idea may help ? i have tried repositioning the needle in numerous places and the speed is spot on up to around 45 mph then it seems to go pete tong from then on - ????

From previous discussions I get the impression that few if any Bongos have speedometers that are accurate over the entire range, no matter what method of kph/mph conversion is used.

I now rely on TomTom.

so do you think its not worth the effort getting it chipped . I'll add something else which may or may not have any bearing on the situation . when i changed the speedo face i naturally set the needle at rest with the pointer , then found out i was around 10mph out - ie doing 35 on the speedo registered 45 on a nearby speedcheck display (bloody handy for calibration purposes -thanks council) so i thought easy peesy move the needle up a bit - bingo it worked - doing 35 registers 35 then i also noticed that with the ignition off - no problem , turn the ignition on and the needle shoots up to 10mph ?? - fine i thought , i can live with that if the speed is right , but the other day i took some friends out and they were in love with the bongos versatility that they all want one now , however as we were driving back a friend pointed out that the speed seemed quite fast ? -speedo registering 60mph but we were pasing everything in sight ,well almost everything but then again porche 911's are a tad more money arent they , anyway we reckon it was doing around 85mph so i really want to get this sorted before her indoors gets nicked and i'm having to cough up for it - anyone have any ideas ?

There is a factsheet in the members area on how to change the dial and set the pointer correctly - well I think there is.

There has been endless discussion on this very topic in the forum, might be worth a look back.

I need to have 35mph reading on my pointer to be doing a legal 30mph.

By the time I get to a correct 60mph my needle is pointing to nearly 70mph.

Jim, you should fit the needle to 0 with the ignition on, but if it reads ok up to 45 then goes out and shoots up to 10mph when you switch the ignition on it sound like the mechanism is faulty,

I'd be looking for a new speedo head rather than chipping.

If you fancy a ride down to Romford we can swop it from one of my Bongos just to try it.

a few toyota estima owners have had problems with chipping of speedos,it sometimes affects the ecu and causes erratic gear changes,easy way to set speedo but not highly recomended is to drive with the clock glass removed and check speed with a sat nav,then replace needle while driving in correct position,works for the estimas,but only try this on a straight quiet road,not recomended on the M25 AT RUSH HOUR

ok , i tried it before by switching on the ignition and setting the pointer to zero and at 35 it was actually doing 45 so logically i thought lets up it 10mph and it will be right . only trouble was that the speedo starts at 10mph when the ignition is turned on . - ok i thought i can put up with that but then realised that the speedo was only correct up to 35mph after that the degrees of accuracy varied with the higher the speed for example 45mph meant i was actually doing 55mph ,50mph -actually meant 65mph ,60mph actually meant nearly 80mph and 70mph reached 3figures so as its not a constant figure its impossible to set for the whole spectrum of speeds - i'm at a loss as to what to do , what do you reckon is needed ?

ok now that sounds cool but i got a bit lost on the wiring part ? how did you overcome the wiring not being the same
