Speedo mileage

Post by tomo » Sat Apr 07, 2007 2:08 pm

Hi all, still getting our bongo ready for SVA. Have made the changes to the speedo for the MPH/KMH. Does any one know how to reset the mileage to record the correct miles. Do I have to completly dismantle the speedo, has anyone ever done this and can you offer me any advise... many thanks.. Tomo

The speedometer and odometer are separate issues.

I assume that you have fitted an electronic "chip" circuit to the speedo to convert it from kph to the legal requirement of mph, or that you have replaced the kph speedo dial with one that shows mph.

That has no effect on the odometer. There is no legal requirement to convert that to read elapsed miles rather than kilometres.
It is possible to convert it but virtually all of us have not done so and continue to record distance in kms.

All you need to remember is that when getting your vehicle MOTd you need to STRESS to the garage that the odo reads in kms and the MOT form will be completed appropriately.

There has been lots of discussion on these topics here on the forum.

Is that right pippin?... I have the converter chip fitted to my bongo, but the odometer reads in miles  I,d assumed that the chip converted both the speed and the miles? (yes, i know what they say about assumption  )

Your right bigdaddy.

The odometer will only record miles if you fit a converter chip.

My problem - and one probably faced by other - is that my oddo reads in miles with its chipped speedo and my last 2 mots have recorded the mileage in ....miles. But this is not an accurate reflection of the distance the vehicle has driven. I have the original paperwork and first UK SVLA certificate so i know the km's and have to do a bit of maths to convert that to miles and then add that to the current total - I know what I'm doing but I suspect anyone I'm selling to would think I'm trying to pull a fast one - don't know a way round this really.
