Mazda Satnav/TV thingy
Just got my nice new bongo, its got one of the mazda pull out screens with tv/sat nav with the satnav thing under the middle set of seats.. its also wired into the tape/radio.
Anyone got any info on it, how to remove it or access the back? also has it got any av input ? so i could connect a freview/dvd unit..
I was thinking of replacing the bottom unit (tape/radio) with a in dash dvd player....

I've got the same sat nav system. You can use the TFT with a cheap DVD player or ipod with video out setting on NTSC. The same is true for certain DVB-T tuners (although dibcom chips are recommended) Some HDD caddies also come with music, xvid, divx media controllers and a remote control.
But the lack of touchscreen make these rather limited.
I would be interesting to know if all of these british exiled japanese TV/SAT NAV units could be somehow offloaded onto ebay Japan!

sorry, I accessed the inputs by removing the mazda head unit underneath. There also appear to be an audio and video input on the unit itself but have not experimented with that yet.
The guys at Clarion told me that all clarion CeNet equipment. So to get a good idea of the wiring download the manual to an old non-touch screen Clarion in-dash monitor.

Thanks for the info, i've replaced the tape/tuner with a cd tuner for now, i've had a good look at the tv unit and have found the audio and video input on the front, and 3 3.5mm jacks at the back but could not confirm if they were input or output, video or audio? so if you have any info on that?
I've also found the yellow phono for the video out.
Any advice on freeview tuners (that i could use for this unit would be very usefull).

hey sorry I remember googling the model number of the TV/monitor (got a wiring page in japanese with clear images) and the NAV unit and also using an equivalent Clarion model from about 2002 (with only semi-motorised TFT and no built-in TV), but I really just used trial and error.
If you give the Clarion repair centre a phone, the techie guys seem quite interseted in Japanese import Addzest units. Like I said any second hand CeNet Clarion gear is compatible with monitor and remote (possibly even buttons on flip screen)so might be worthwhile if going cheap.
As far as DVB-T, it would be nice if we could just use those two funny antennae at rear of the van. The important thing to remember is that the transmitters in the UK are very weak compared to say Germany or Japan. That's why you always get silly antennae with no chance of any reception in portable recievers (like laptop cards etc). So the best in-car recievers will have a diversity antennae input (2 inputs) and if you want to reliably recieve TV while in motion, then it must have a Dibcom chip in it (there are two types but even the older one is an improvement).
Sorry about the vague advice and hope it just points you in the right direction.

satnav/tv DIN unit
It is possible to burn uk mapping data to a dvd and put it in the addzest Clarion unit, but hardly worth doing when Maplin are selling a portable touch screen model for £92, and you can get a portable TV/DVD player for a similar amount or less from LIDL.ALDI etc.
If really required, you could replace the radio with a combo DVD/CD player. Sony do one for about £300. But the result won't be as good as a modern portable one, in my humble opinion. The fact is that electronic equipment becomes out of date scrap in no time. I recently took some stuff down to the Marple tip. I noticed all the tvs in one unit, and making the usual banal converstion point, said to one of the staff that it wasn't worth fixing them. The chap pointed out that I was out of date (I know that only too well) and people now throw things away because they are out of fashion. All the tvs in the container unit were functional, but didn't match the home decor any more.
By the way, to remove the satnav it is easier to use the old type Clarion radio removal keys, after removing the rectangular decor strip around the unit. You can use pastry spatulas or two steel rules, but the correct tools are only about £3 off ebay.

Well I never, Maplins selling sat nav, funny never thought of holiday camps doing that, hi de hi peeps. Wish mine had goodies like that in it three years ago when I bought it, back then everything had to be removed for the test. Worth a try to get it working must have been fairly expensive add on for the orig owner. Happy motoring.
