Gearbox Solenoids

Post by Ian » Tue Mar 17, 2026 10:06 am

This received from member Colin Andrews. Can anyone help?

"I have a problem with my automatic gearbox and was hoping you could help or know someone who could. I have a 1997 automatic 4wd diesel Bongo.
The gearbox will not shift up from 2nd to 3rd gears. I believe it is a solenoid issue. I have a spare gearbox, with the exact same number, which has seized but as far as I am aware the electronics are sound. Is it possible to replace the solenoid/complete 'board' to try to solve the issue or is it more complicated ie the gearbox would need to be reprogrammed?"

I have the gearbox manual and normally, depends on version, you can replace either the group of solenoids or individual solenoids.
You will need to read the manual to locate section etc. but has some very helpful diagrams for the solenoids;
