Alternator draining starter battery - see wiring please help

Post by ItaBongo » Sun Sep 07, 2025 10:49 am

Hi

I’ve finally found the cause of my stater battery drain

The alternator when I remove the top wire (green/white) the draining coming from the starter battery stops

What is this cable ?

Also if I invert cables no drain

What should I do ??

Any help very appreciated

You haven't told us which engine the diagrams and functions are different! Its possibly either the field winding or sense signals if you have the ignition on but engine not running (hence alternator NOT generating) then you will have the Charge lamp drawing a current.

Sorry it’s a 2002 V6 Petrol

I swapped the cable around (battery voltage on the bottom connector & ignition cable on the top connector)

All looks ok, alternator it’s charging ok and no more draw when everything off
