USA Bongo V6

Post by Joey-78692 » Wed Jun 18, 2025 4:12 am

Looking to find a replacement timing belt kit for my 1999 2.5 V6 J5-DE, this particular engine was not available here in the USA I seem to be stuck. Does anyone know any options for the USA, other than buying the kit from the UK, then having it shipped to this side of the pond?

Think you maybe out of luck.... Mazda 929, Mazda Sentia and Kia Enterprise with J5-DE engine had limited production runs in Japan and Korea only. Trawling the micro fiches at a Mazda dealer might be possible, but can't see that cam belt being common to anything else. The tariff war has settled, so getting parts ordered from UK might be the best option?

Yeah, so I have come to this realisation as well, even the Mazda 929 is a different timing belt as it was a 3.0 V6, not a 2.5 V6. The belt for the V6 Bongo is a 136-tooth count and 25mm belt width. Thinking it was a cambelt, I did an alternator test just to make sure, which came up faulty lol. So it's the Alternator or the Alternator belt on the bottom of the engine.

I just had to order struts and the bumps from the UK. Beginning to realise that hardly any Euro or N American Japanese market used this engine. I was planning to get my front shock done, but my mechanic here in NYC will only do it with new coil springs rather than using the existing ones. So, may have to order from the UK again, as I think they are unique as well to the bongo.

Thankfully, there is a place here that still repairs existing alternators, depending maybe an issue with the belt itself again.
