Stuck in reverse

Post by newtonlord12 » Tue Mar 04, 2025 2:26 pm

Hello everyone, i am helping a mate fix there bongo that has been sat for a while. When it was put away/ left to sit he said it would get stuck reversing.
I am now having a look at fixing it and thought id see if anyone knows the answer/reason to the problem. I have got the car started but it into reverse ( with no problems) and then tried to reverse it.
The car moved about let’s say 10inches and then the rear drivers side wheel locks up. It will move back forwards and then back to the exact same spot when trying to reverse and just get stuck again. The other sides wheel will spin if i give it some more throttle but the one that’s stuck just stays stuck.
Any ideas or help anyone can give me ?
Thank you Newton

Welcome aboard!

Have you checked that the brakes (both of them foot and handbrake shoes) are not seized ?
See these pages and the next link for the parking/handbrake;

You don't say which year or engine it always helps as there have been changes over time as well!

I would have thought that the breaks wouldn’t be seized as it will move forward and backwards good 10-20 inches
It’s on an M reg so believe it’s 94-95 ?

Well if its not the rear offside brake then it can only be problem with the differential, given that the nearside rear can be made to spin!

Worth jacking up and try to turn the stuck wheel, and is it 4wd?

Maybe jack both sides and try reverse and drive, don’t do this if it is 4wd.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

What was the problem ? It always helps to report back so that others can diagnose and cure there problems with less fuss!

Why would you go to the bother of posting back that the problem is fixed & not share what the actual problem was??

Apologies the break was just stuck on, rocked it back and forth and it loosened up, it was on gravel and that wasn’t helping and up against the side of a building so couldn’t even get the wheel off to take a look.

Ah that's good to hear, its the most common problem that gets reported with those symptoms. especially when they haven't moved for awhile.
