Auto diesel HOLD flashing...

Post by Lupins » Sat Mar 01, 2025 6:05 am

Hi guys, hopefully someone can help me out as I am eather frustrated with the issue.

I purchased a bongo friendee around a month ago and all seemed well. Seemed well takencare of, and the owner knew what he was taking about. The only real questions I had were around the intake making a lot of noise, and the "hold" system. He convinced me both were fine.

After less than 50km travel (in a garage getting some internal changes for around a month) I finally got to take it home and realised the hold light is flashing. I am fairly confident I saw it comes on when test driving - but it didn't appear to be a error light so I assumed it was "holding" the gear longer as I was accelerating faster than usual.

Now after a lot of research it's become clear this is a warning error light.

Testing it I get what appears to be two fault codes 16 and code 64 (or possibly a 6, 10, 60, and 4 cause of the way the '95 optical coding works). 16 doesn't seem to relate to anything in the guide I'm using (ERG valve position sensor in other Mazda's), and 64 says 3-2 timing solenoid.

There is nothing obvious wrong. Seems to change through all gears fine (a bit sharp from 1-2 perhaps). Revs at 80kmh are between 1.5-2.0k which seems about right. There are four (actually five) obviousish gear changes. Can't see any issues changing down, everything seems to be running fine
(though bear on mind I've done 50kms. I have nothing to compare against). The only thing that obviously doesn't work it the hold button/system itself.

Attempts to clear the code do nothing. It returns as soon as the ignition is turned on (doesn't need to move or run). Which seems odd.

Previous owner claims to have no knowledge of an issue before (I'm a bit doubtful - but he does seem genuine.)

As mentioned, I am frustrated as. Was meant to be off this weekend and now I have a van I can't trust to go anywhere.

I've read up on any relevant info I can find, but am now stuck. Appears this is a solely electrical issue (So unless there is a level sensor in there oil level should make no difference). Obviously changing the pack is a last ditch option due to cost (plus extremely high shipping) for a issue that doesn't seem to be effecting anything. But as the same time, I don't want to drive it not knowing what the potential damage could be.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Sounds like the vehicle has been laid up awhile. First thing I'd do is disconnect both starter and leisure batteries and pump the brake pedal - this should clear the ECU errors. Test your batteries, make sure they are well charged and in good condition.

Then reconnect both batteries, start and see if the hold light starts flashing again - if it does then clearly record the error codes. Confirm what engine, year and if you do indeed have a leisure battery fitted, then search the forums / members area for information and come back.

Edit:- assume you are using this...
