Freda front grill safety mesh projectile protection

Post by BongoBongo123 » Fri Oct 04, 2024 4:38 pm

I thought I would share something with the members here. The Freda has very large openings between slats on the front grill, more so than the Bongo. Good for anti rust access on the top of the front/sides of cross member but less protection for expensive and exposed parts.

When driving on the M4 a while back something flew up from a 4 wheel lorry, from at least 100M in front of me, looked like a bolt as it shot into the front of the van. Luckily no damage.

That Air con condenser in front of the rad is £800.00 at one place for info value !

If that had hit the air con condensor or even worse the rad that could spell BIG trouble and expense.

So I have purchased some aluminium mesh from Amazon, one roll not quite enough. So you are looking at £20.00 with some cable ties.

I just had a little look and the material is tidy enough (for me anyway) to put a layer on the top slats on the outside of the grill and then
a layer lower down on the inside of the grill.

Type "Supernic Car Grille Mesh 4x8mm 40X13 inch Aluminium Car Racing Grill Net Vent Tuning Durable Honeycomb Mesh Grille for Car " into Amazon and you will see the product I ordered. In fact I ordered a £12.00 roll first and this one second.

I am likely to use cable ties and possibly strong nylon fishing line to fix it on.

Hope this saves someone some money.

That's a good idea. I've heard of a few damaged over the years, once by a pheasant!

Thanks for the replies.

UPDATE : YOU CAN DO IT WITH 1 SHEET - JUST ABOUT

Photo coming, took me 45mins this morning. I will probably have to redo the to part tomorrow as there is a little gap at the bottom.
Just a few cable ties sacrificed, top part is the easy part.

Could be £10.00 wisely spent, I had some 300mm cable ties knocking around which was perfect. A tad fiddly
doing the bit under the number plate but not too hard. Probably worth doing on the Bongo version as well but the
Freda openings are really large. Maybe 6cm gaps.

Yes it should do, it is usually the windscreen you worry about usually with those massive 4 wheel site lorries carrying stones and what not flicking stones etc. up with their huge tyres. A windscreen is potentially the cheaper to be broke compared to the air con rad.

Those 4 wheel axles puts stones under such a high pressure they come towards you like bullets. I tend to keep well away and this why
it hit low down and not the screen on its downard trajectory.
