Head blown - dilemma

Post by Kernowel » Wed Sep 25, 2024 10:19 am

Hi all

Please can you give me your view of a quote for cylinder head replace and associated work?

The head's blown. As per my previous post there was a coolant issue after a coolant pipe was changed by my
Bongo specialist. Suspicion was the system wasn't topped up sufficiently and also needed bleeding.

Subsequently my local MOT garage drove the vehicle while the coolant alarm was going off, and I quote: "Oh I wondered what that noise was" :oops:

So, I nursed the vehicle back up to my bongo specialist 50 odd miles away. Stopping twice to top up the system. And sure enough the cylinder head has blown.

The specialists are quoting me around 2,500 to replace the block etc.

I am not a mechanic and I am wondering whether this is all going to be worth it. I can afford it but will it just be throwing good money after bad?

The vehicle is a 1997 bongo with 172 km on the clock. Tons of service history. Excellent welding work recently done by restoration specialist at a cost of £4500, so the chassis is ok. New exhaust last week for the MOT which is clean for 12 months.

Any views on the cost of the head work and if it's worth it?

Cheers
Hosk

Sorry to hear, not sure if they are replacing the entire engine Block & Head or just the head and gaskets etc. assuming its a diesel ?
A search search.php?keywords=%2Breplacement+%2Be ... mit=Search
shows various costs but bear in mind that inflation over the last year or so has put up costs especially the labour aspects!

Thanks Geoff. Yes it's a diesel. Just the head, not entire engine. Looking at the other posts and factoring in inflation as you say, I think the cost is reasonable. In for a penny in for £2500 quid 😬

Yes that is the usual route, there are items on eBay supplying complete kits but you could also try the usual suppliers from Bongo specialists who might offer better quality or service or may even be closer to you;
These companies do a range of spares, not all will have everything so try them all;
For smaller parts its probably best to ring companies as not all the smaller parts make it on to the web sites!
