Had Freda Dinitrol undersealed...

Post by BongoBongo123 » Wed Jul 10, 2024 5:19 pm

we are keeping it for as long as we can, so it made sense £714.00 at a classic car place, smells as you might expect in the van. Will keep you updated
on when the smell disspiates, so you can gauge as and when to do it relative to any sleep in journeys you might do. Would not be nice inhaling that all night.

Black kind of paint stuff, I cannot really know how well it was done but time will tell. Application looks decent and tidy/smooth/shiny.

The place that did it works with lots of classic old cars, UK, Japanese and American. Very good looking
garage inside and used to keeping the old ones on the road so I hold out hope.

Simply put any car, van is gonna be £6,000.00 + for something 1/2 decent, then all the usual maintenance so add another grand, tyres, service, maybe brakes etc. No point getting any6thing else and it won't be a camper either.

Estimating another £600-800 spent on some suspension front and rear MOT advisories next year. And probably new tyres next year or year after.

They call cost money but u7ndersealing these vans is probably money well spent, given that holes underneath are not somethign anyone wants.
Seems I got it just the right time before there are any holes !

I do the rear arches and cosmetic stuff myself. I am going to POR the front crossmember before winter this year. Being a Freda I can get to 99pct of it through the big holes between the plastic spoiler bars.

We keep Bongoing for the foreseeable !

Very little smell inside after a check now so that's about 5 days. When I sprayed 6 aerosol cans of Waxoyl into the sills during winter time that smell lasted bets part of 6 months.

Very pleased with this so far. Money well spent I think, plenty of it under there though cnanot see all the nooks and crannies.

Yes it has been about a week and I opened today to vent and there was just a little residual whiff left. Nowhere near as bad as Waxoyl aerosol cans in the sills. But I suppose the sills are much closer to the insides of the van in some way and enclosed, (and it was winter so low temps does not eveporate the solvents) very close to the side door cubby hole at the bottom.

Driving the van passes air over the bottom so it helps evaporation.

I am hoping this keeps the rust problems on the chassic away for frankly,, all years of ownership. I do the PITA rear arches every year myself in one way or another, either POR15 or Waxoyl, they were POR15's as best as I could 2 years back. I assess each side come September and work out what is likely to work best.

I think Dinitrol is German and needs a top up coat at some point but I am not sure I will
bother with it, depends on if we get a very good run of Bongo luck over the next years.

Doing what I can for the old van, the never ending battle between preventative/predictive maintenance and stuff that just breaks without warning.

I mean really what else can you get without dumping a very large sum of money on something. And then is it a camper van is the question ? That virtually doubles the price of most things old VW vans included.

The irony being we have the van in good nick and no money left to go anywhere !
