Low coolant alarm saved the day

Post by Eratosthenes » Sat Jan 14, 2023 5:25 pm

Yesterday we travelled to mid Wales for the day.
Starting the engine for leaving and the LCA activated.
On checking we had lost some coolant and probably looked worse as we had parked on a steep slope.
Did the return journey in 5 hops of approx 12 miles at a time. Letting the engine cool down, top up and off again.
We did manage to get home without the LCA sounding.
Just thankful we had the alarm fitted otherwise the outcome could have been far worse.
The leak appears to be from the T junction area of the steel pipe drivers side, which seems quite common.
There are some really good threads on the forum, especially NB's marathons.
I had arranged for MOT and service next week and hopefully the long steel pipe can be replaced fist of all,
I read that replacing the steel pipe can be rather awkward if working on your back, is it much easier when on vehicle ramps/lifts?

For any new Bongo owners take, the LCA can save your engine,

Yes, it's a lot easier. Just can be hard to get the pipe mountings undone as they rust and can snap, length of release agent usually gets em off.
May have to remove the battery and tray too. Good luck

I replaced ours and even with the van on the diy ramps giving and 8 inch rise it was awkward but doable. Don’t envy you under a Bongo this time of year. Good luck have fun.
