Gearbox Solenoid Pack - change

Post by notpoodle » Wed Aug 18, 2021 9:11 am

Ugh :( the quest continues. Hold flashing, Rev counter going crazy. Speedo variably out. Gear changes sluggish.

Gearbox centre said TPS sensor - that was changed, made no difference whatsoever.

New crank sensor - we'll see, picking her up from the garage in a minute. HOPEFULLY this will have helped.

GEarbox Solenoids - garage are now saying they can't change these as they go somewhere in the middle of the gearbox and they're not confident in taking it apart (advice is to take it back to the auto gearbox centre). I'm a little confused as it sounded like a relatively easy job that some people even managed themselves eg. at the bottom of the gearbox, not right in the middle of it? Garage is a Bongo specialist (recommended on here) who have been great otherwise, so I'm sure they're doing the right thing?

UPDATE :) she is home. I went the scenic route from the garage. Hold Light did not come on and the Rev counter looked normal!! Yay!! Speedo still whacky but there's definitely a difference in how she drives, changes up much smoother! Fingers crossed ....

and because I am mad, I decided to try her with the empty horse trailer (now that she has a newly welded / reconstructed back end and new towbar fitted), on a 6 mile jolly down the A road and back. Speedo still dodgy, but everything else seemed fine! Rev counter steady, sounded 'healthy', temperature stayed within the usual constraints, all good!

Think I'll still get the solenoid pack fitted though, won't do any harm, right?

Making any unnecessary changes can be harmful!
Why not carry on using it with the replaced crank sensor for a while at least ? Then you will know what the cure was otherwise it could be either/both the sensor or a faulty solenoid.
The crank sensors often cause these problems as the ECU needs to know the engine speed, the throttle position and road speed in order to control the automatic gearbox.

I certainly don't want to do any harm

The speedo is still being weird, but at least I figured out that 25mph on the speedo is 30mph in reality, 35mph equals 50mph etc. (no, it's not consistently 'out'). I can work around that for the time being.

Do you have a chipped speedo so that it indicates MpH and Miles rather than KpH and Km's ? They are known for going faulty and producing odd results or nothing at all!

Not that I'm aware of! The speed it reads does not tally with km/h either. The garage swapped out for a new clock and couldn't find anything weird. I also checked the odometer yesterday, That one is in km for sure. Had a good look at tyres as well, they're all 15, same specs all around. They do need balancing though (I get the 50mph steering judders), would that have an effect on the speedo?

Yes tyre size will affect speedo but in a consistent manner, I would think that any random fluctuations on a speedo will either be a sensor or intermittent wiring problems causing it to drop readings downwards as pulses go missing.

oh yikes :( sounds like a bit of a headscratcher. Neither garage not gearbox centre found anything. Where would one even look?

Start by having a look at the sensor at the rear of the gearbox, drop it out give it a clean and check the connections, then work back from there if nothing obvious.
21-5H2 is the sensor http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... 02.html#24
