Replace back box or whole exhaust?

Post by notpoodle » Wed Jun 23, 2021 10:13 am

Hi, tried finding a sticky post on this, but couldn’t find it (if anyone has a link, do share!).

So, Belinda Bongo’s back box sheared off last night. As you can see in the pics, it looks pretty knackered (not sure how old the exhaust is, I don’t have all the history). Is this something that I could try to fix myself (the back box is on Bongo spares), or will it need welding on?

Or is it better to replace the whole thing (rest of the exhaust system looks pretty knackered, too!)? Again, is it just bolted on or is welding involved (sorry if I sound like an idiot)?

You can certainly replace just parts of the exhaust, they will frequently fail at the welding points between sections. As to replacing the whole exhaust it really depends on how bad it is which is difficult to say from photo's alone. I've normally only had to replace the back box as that is the point that suffers most.

Thank you! Sounds like a welding operation then, local garage it is!
