2.0L auto ignition timing using strobe light.

Post by Brelsak » Wed Nov 27, 2019 3:15 pm

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie to Bongo Fury and its my first attempt to make contact with anyone for that matter using a forum.
My wife and I purchased a 2.0L Auto 1999 Friendee a couple of months ago.
I discovered that one of the spark plugs was not screwed fully home and on inspection had been inserted cross threaded. I purchased a Sealy
14mm reverse action spark plug thread chaser and I'm pleased to say that I've been able to chase out the damaged thread and reseat the plug.

Now, the next thing I'd planned to do was check the ignition timing but I've been unable to work out how to disconnect the vacuum advance. The distributor on this 2.0l does not have a visible vacuum advance diaphragm.
Not being familiar with the Mazda engine setup I'm unable to identify a vacuum connection.
So my question is, does anyone know if there is a vacuum advance mechanism and if so what pipes I need to disconnect and where they are located in order to disable it so that I can accurately check the ignition timing.

Your advice with this would be much appreciated.

Welcome! If you want to adjust the engine at that sort of level it might be worth getting the engine manual for the FE-E and J5-DE engines at least, I can't find any reference to "vacuum advance" in my copy the best would be Idle Speed Control that uses the vacuum system to control the idling speed.
Manuals available from the shop https://bongoland.co.uk/product/bongo-w ... lumes-1-2/

Hi thanks very much for your reply. I found some info on the forum relating to putting the ecu into diagnostics mode. Having followed the info I was able to set the timing using the strobe light and adjusting the distributor.
All ok now.
Thanks again.

Hello
I think if I recall correctly it 6 degrees before TDC to adjust the timing. Maybe wrong mind.
