Head Bolt Tightening

Post by JulesMartin » Wed Nov 27, 2019 8:00 pm

Hi Guys, It's been a few years since I last stripped an engine down as far as I have my TD Bongo and indeed the first Diesel! I've had the head skimmed and tested for cracks and leaks and all is good and got the head back this afternoon from the engineers who seem to have done a great job in skimming, testing and lapping in the valves. In a chat with the engineer he advised torquing the new stretch bolts down in increments of 10Flb starting at 50 and finishing at 90. I know the general consensus is to tighten down to I think 39Nm then 90 degrees and then another 90 degrees. I'm just wondering what you guys think? The guy builds engines for a living and is quite familiar with the Bongo/Ranger engine and its problems.

Just remember that the front two bolts "A" have a much lower setting .

Tightening torque 18—19 N·m {1.8—2.0 kgf·m, 13.1—14.4 ft·lbf}

Yup. Todays the day. the head is all built up again and ready to go on now. have put new three way water connector on, had exhaust manifold skimmed as well. Got new thermostat, temp sender, air, oil and fuel filters, new cam belt, tensioner and spring. should keep me quiet for the weekend :D
