Indicator stuck on in rain

Post by root-n-5th » Sun Aug 18, 2019 2:19 pm

Greetings all.

Just back from a wet weekend in the Bongo. There has been an annoying issue of late (another), and it is that when it rains, after about five minutes, the right hand indicator stick in the on position. It doesn’t flash, just both front, rear and the dash indicator are a solid light. If I indicate right it flashes slightly brighter than the solid light but doesn’t go off in between flashes. Left indicator works as normal.

If it stops raining it will turn off after about half and hour.

I’ve had a few suggestions that it might be a bad earth, but where do I start looking for this?

Any other ideas?

It’s annoying, but I’m always concerned it might be mistaken for me indicating to turn right.

Many thanks,
Sam

Does the flasher work for the other side OK? If so I would be looking at the wiring behind the lights to start with to make sure there isn't a short induced by the rain as the other lights are earth switched so they have live power to them all the the time as oppsed to the flashers that are earther and the live is switched. Have you had the indicator unit out so far ?

Raining on and off today and consistently sticking on. Have taken out the front unit and. I obvious water ingress into the unit and the wires are all dry.

I’ve discovered it only does it when the lights are on. Is that a short somewhere?

Any ideas what the next step might be?

Cheers.

It sounds very much like two wires with broken insulation VERY close together and when water gets in then its shorting the wires out, but they will have to be close to each other for that to happen! Trouble is it can be anywhere along the loom, but obviously a point where water is getting in, most obvious points will be at the front and rear clusters.

If you've never taken a rear cluster out, once the two screws have been removed then the cluster slides SIDEWAYS out towards the edge of the vehicle, don't try to pull them off towards the rear!
