Another problem. Fluctuating revs on hills.

Hi all, well we made it to Devon from Suffolk but a new problem emerged
When accelerating up a steep hill the Rev counter will get to about 3k rpm and then bounce between 3 and 2.5rpm and the speed will not increase above 30mph. On the run it sat happily at 60ish and no problems. It's a bit like it's hitting the Rev limiter but isn't.

Is this normal for a bongo automatic?

New one on me.

I've twice had a fluctuating rev counter and both times it was the alternator on it's way out, but that doesn't explain the speed limiting.

If you're still in Devon then Allan's, Plymouth, may be worth a try.

I emailed Allan's before I left to try book the bongo in for a check over but he is away this week

It shouldn’t be the alternator as I am on my 2nd in a matter of weeks (after finding a fault with signal wiring all is fine now and volt meter was constantly on for the whole trip and all is ok with that... phew!)

I will have a search through the forum, maybe its something like a TPS starting to play up. As long as it gets me and the family around Devon and back home next Saturday I will be very happy!

Yes sorry there's maintenance being carried out so we cant use the workshop. It's nice to have a break tho.

This one is hard to guess without warning lights or fault codes.
A few ideas -
Dirt in the banjo filter in the fuel pump.
Blocked air filter
Low gearbox oil level.
Sensor problem.
Solenoid problem.
Blocked egr.
Faulty ecu.
Or something different, none of the above.

Haha, I am sure a break is welcome! I could do with a break from my Bongo and ive only had it a few months

Thanks for the suggestions, I only brought a few tools with me but will give the Banjo filter a clean (had a major service before I left so other filters should be ok) Ill be gentle with it this week and nurse it back to Suffolk and will work on the problems then.

Oh and check the actual fuel filter is tight and check the banjo filter.

Thanks for all the replies, I have limited tools with me but have cleaned the banjo filter without any change to symptoms. However it drives fine as long as I don't push it over 3000rpm it will also Rev over 3000rpm without any issue in neutral. The problem seems to have coincided with a difficulty to start in mornings. Normaly it fires into life first time but since being in Devon it takes 3 or 4 goes at starting. I'm thinking maybe air is getting into the system over night causing this and maybe a vacuum leake is also causing the Rev issues. Once hot (and any seals have expanded) it starts fine first time. There is no unusual smoke after struggling to start in mornings.

Fingers crossed we get back to Suffolk ok and I can then investigate further
