AFT issue. Roof wont fully close.

Post by hugsjugs » Mon Oct 01, 2018 8:58 pm

On a trip to Scotland. At first the AFT wouldn't open the last couple of inches. Yesterday a cable came out of the arm of the roof tent. We got the roof almost down but not completely. It's shut on the passenger side but not on the driver side. The wind on the motorway was lifting it. Comments on a Facebook group suggested the motor has dropped down. Problem is we don't want to raise the roof in case we can't get it home. We're going to try and secure it somehow and go back from Stirling to Manchester via slow roads. Can anyone help with:

1. Any suggestions for how to secure the roof?
2. Anyone know who does AFT repairs in the North? I believe this is fixable if we get it home OK. The roof should still go up.

I'm using my mobile so can't post pictures but if you're in the FB group pics are here https://m.facebook.com/groups/252905573 ... up_comment

Adrian at Japandirect in Bury (who I use for all work) has fixed my AFT before and dealt with many others also. Great guy to deal with and a longstanding Bongo specialist. He can be reached on 0161-763-3003. Good luck, keep us posted. [-o<

P.S. Usual fix for securing roof is a rope looped through front windows. Be careful / wary of raising it if the mechanism/motor mounts are compromised. I'd leave it alone if you can until its been looked at professionally. Seem to recall one of my problems was motor mount coming loose, but it was many years ago.

That's awesome thank you! =D> . Bury isn't far at all.I'll give him a ring.
I think the roof should stay put if we take it easy. A rope round the windows was our thought too. We'll give that a go.

Rope to secure is the official method in the handbook.

Might pay to tie to the handles with the doors open so you can get in and out.

Best to pass the string thru the doors when open and tie off, then close the doors afterwards, that way it tightens it a little more but you can get in/out.
